New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday arrived in Sweden on the third leg of his five-nation tour, with talks expected to focus on trade, green technology, artificial intelligence, defence manufacturing and innovation partnerships between the two countries. The visit comes at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and follows Modi’s engagements in the UAE and the Netherlands.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi’s Sweden visit is aimed at deepening cooperation in emerging sectors and strengthening bilateral trade, which touched $7.75 billion in 2025. Discussions are also expected around resilient supply chains, climate action, startups, space cooperation and the green transition.
The Prime Minister had earlier visited Sweden in 2018. Then, he had attended the first-ever India-Nordic Summit.
During the visit, Modi will hold bilateral talks with Kristersson to review the full spectrum of India-Sweden relations. According to reports, the leaders will identify new opportunities for cooperation in key sectors and “explore new avenues of cooperation to enhance bilateral trade” and “Swedish FDI into India which has reached $2.825 billion (2000-2025).”
The discussions are expected to focus on collaboration in green transition, artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defence manufacturing, space cooperation, climate action and strengthening people-to-people ties. Sweden is one of Europe’s leading innovation-driven economies.
Before departing for Sweden, Modi concluded a high-profile visit to the Netherlands where India and the Netherlands elevated bilateral ties to the level of a “strategic partnership” after talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.
During his stay in The Hague, Modi met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at Palace Huis ten Bosch, where discussions centred on education, innovation, semiconductors, digital cooperation, water management and green partnerships.
Addressing the Indian diaspora in the Netherlands, Modi said India was “dreaming big” and highlighted the country’s rapid growth in artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing. He noted that India now hosts the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem and said Indian startups were making significant advances in AI, defence and the space sector.
The Prime Minister also underlined growing India-Netherlands cooperation in areas including energy security and water security, while expressing optimism that the India-European Union free trade agreement would further strengthen ties. He warned that the world was passing through a “decade full of challenges” marked by the pandemic, wars and the global energy crisis.
Modi’s five-nation tour, running from May 15 to 20, includes visits to the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy.
