Paris: Just the other day, the UK reported more than 1 lakh fresh COVID-19 cases in a day for the first time since the pandemic broke. Now, another European superpower France has experienced a similar spike.
Even as Omicron rages in Europe, France added six-digit infections in the last 24 hours to set a single-day record in the country. The previous two days had seen 58,500 and 94,100 new COVID-positive cases in France.
The UK, on the other hand, recorded 1.2 lakh fresh coronavirus infections on Saturday.
France’s Health Minister Olivier Veran said Omicron is set to become the dominant variant in France by the end of the year. COVID-19 restrictions, however, have not yet been tightened.
More than 16,000 COVID patients are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals in France, including 3,300 in ICU.
The COVID death toll in France so far stands at 122,546.
As for vaccination, 76.5% of the eligible population has been fully inoculated.
