Balasore: India on Thursday test-fired the medium range nuclear-capable, surface-to-surface Agni-II ballistic missile from the Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast in Balasore district 08.38 AM.
The 20-meter long missile with 1.3 metre in diametre, has the capability to carry a 1000 kg payload of both conventional and nuclear capable warhead with a strike range of 2000 km.
Defence sources said the test was aimed at re-establishing the operational effectiveness of the weapon system.
Senior scientists of DRDO and including the project director of Agni-II were present during the test-fire.
Another missile of other series will be tested tomorrow.
The Agni missile series being developed by DRDO as a deterrent against nuclear armed neighbors are among India’s most sophisticated weapons of integrated guided missile development program (IGMDP).
The first test of the Agni-II missile was held on April 11, 1991 while the final test was done on May 4, 2017.
