‘Ahimsa’ In Preamble: Know When Odisha CM Had First Proposed This Idea

Bhubaneswar: Almost three years after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik called for the idea of Ahimsa, or non-violence to be included in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, the Odisha Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution on the same.

The resolution came on the day when Odisha is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s first visit to the state on March 23, 1921.

The House also discussed various aspects of his visit to Odisha.

In May 2018, the Chief Minister had first suggested that the word ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence) be added to the Preamble as the “greatest tribute” to Mahatma Gandhi, as the nation planned to celebrate his 150th birth anniversary.

A year later, he reiterated the demand while addressing the second meeting of the national committee for the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.

“Ahimsa is the most powerful message given by India to the world. “It gave a unique identity to our struggle in the entire world,” he said and added that ‘Ahimsa’ is the only path of peace, development and equality.
