Gurugram: Air India has announced that its flights from Delhi to Japan will be landing at the Haneda Airport in Tokyo instead of Narita International Airport, in the same city, from March 31 this year. According to a statement issued by Air India, this will provide passengers a quicker and more affordable access to central Tokyo.
Air India also announced an expanded codeshare agreement with its Star Alliance partner, All Nippon Airways (ANA), to provide Air India guests convenient onward connections from Tokyo Haneda to 6 other major cities in Japan.
Haneda Airport is located 18 km from downtown Tokyo. The airline claims that passengers landing there will be able to reach Tokyo Station in about 30 minutes. It took them nearly an hour to get there from Narita, which is 70 km away. This will not only save time, but give passengers more cost-effective transportation options, the statement says.
Nipun Aggarwal, chief commercial officer, Air India, is quoted as saying: “Moving our flights to Haneda Airport is a significant advantage for our guests by bringing them much closer to the centre of Tokyo. With this shift, we are not only connecting two vibrant capitals more effectively but also helping boost trade and tourism between India and Japan.”
Beginning April 1, 2025, Air India will place its ‘AI’ designator code on ANA’s flights between Tokyo Haneda and 6 other cities in Japan, namely Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okinawa, Osaka, and Sapporo. This will allow Air India passengers to travel to any of these destinations on a single ticket, with their baggage checked through the entire journey.
Reciprocally, ANA will place its ‘NH’ designator code on Air India’s flights between Delhi to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune, enabling its passengers, seamless access to Air India’s robust domestic India network.
“Our deepened partnership with ANA opens up Japan like never before for our guests, combined with ANA’s reach into Air India’s extensive Indian network,” Aggarwal has stated.
