While businesses around the world are failing due to lockdowns, Amazon is looking to hire one lakh workers for delivery and warehouse operations. Strange? As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a surge in e-commerce orders as people are apprehensive to walk into stores and there are lockdowns in many places.
The Seatle-based company will also increase the hourly pay of workers by $2 in the United States through April.
The company announced that it is seeing a significant increase in demand in the United States and there would be delays in Prime shipments as they are running out of stock for popular household staples.
“Getting a priority item to your doorstep is vital as communities practice social-distancing, particularly for the elderly and others with underlying health issues. We are seeing a significant increase in demand, which means our labor needs are unprecedented for this time of year,” Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations, Dave Clark said in a blog post on Monday.
Most health experts including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have advised people to stay indoors and practise social distancing to prevent the virus from spreading.
Malls and stores are facing lockdowns in various parts of the world, including United States and India.
