Ambulance failure: Unborn child dies, woman critical

Kalahandi: A woman lost her unborn child owing to delayed ambulance service in Kalahandi district on Thursday. Her condition is stated to be critical.
According to reports, family members of Malati Majhi of Kansabundei village in the district had to carry her in a sling for around 6 km after 102 ambulance failed to turn up despite repeated calls even as she was in labour and complained of piercing pain. The woman was later taken in a private vehicle to Lanjigarh, from where she was carried in an ambulance to Bhawanipatna hospital.
Owing to delay in treatment, the unborn child died during operation. The woman is critical, hospital sources said.
Following the incident, the Block Development Officer directed the officials concerned to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit a report at the earliest.
Such cases of ambulance failure have been pouring in for past few days reflecting badly on healthcare services in the rural areas of the state.
