New Delhi: Union Home minister Amit Shah held a meeting with Delhi Police and other officials to take stock of the law and order situation after protests by farmers turned violent.

Even as thousands of protesting farmers broke barricades and stormed the Red Fort not paying heed to the plea of farm leaders to exercise restraint, the authorities suspended the internet services in some parts of Delhi and closed the Metro stations as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh urged the farmers to vacate Delhi and return to the borders.

Shocking scenes in Delhi. The violence by some elements is unacceptable. It’ll negate goodwill generated by peacefully protesting farmers. Kisan leaders have disassociated themselves & suspended #TractorRally. I urge all genuine farmers to vacate Delhi & return to borders.

— Capt.Amarinder Singh (@capt_amarinder) January 26, 2021

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also condemned the violence. Here is what the party wrote on its Twitter handle.

We strongly condemn the violence seen in today’s protest. It is regrettable that the Central govt allowed the situation to deteriorate to such an extent. The movement has been peaceful for the last two months: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). #Delhi pic.twitter.com/2PCls0zB19
