New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will present the Vande Mataram bill in Rajya Sabha in the Monsoon Session, which begins on July 20.
The legislation, which is part of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Amendment Bill 2026, aims to grant Vande Mataram, the National Song, the same legal and statutory protection as Jana Gana Mana, the National Anthem.
Currently, everyone is expected to stand, sing and respect the National Anthem, with insults being prohibited, under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.
The new bill seeks to extend identical legal protections to Vande Mataram.
It proposes a jail term of up to three years for disrupting the singing of Vande Mataram, like in the case of Jana Gana Mana.
According to the bill, whoever intentionally prevents or disturbs singing of the National Anthem or National Song, or causes disturbance to any assembly engaged in such singing, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
The Bill got its clearance at a meeting of
The Union Cabinet cleared the bill at a recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
