Bhubaneswar: Extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan with eye pattern is likely to intensify into ‘Super Cyclone’ in the next 12 hours, India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said on Monday.
From 5.30 pm on Monday till 5.30 am on Tuesday, Amphan will be a ‘Super Cyclone’ with wind speed ranging from 200 kmph to 265 kmph. However, it will be in the sea during this 12 hours. At the time of landfall on May 20 afternoon/evening, the wind speed will be 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph, the IMD bulletin said.
It further stated that the extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ over central parts of south Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 13 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 5.30 am over west-central and adjoining central parts of south Bay of Bengal, about 790 km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha), 940 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1060 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh),” the IMD said.
It is likely to intensify further into a super cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours, it further said.
“It is then very likely to move north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) on May 20 evening as a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph,” it added.
