Baleshwar/Bhubaneswar: Another flood loomed over Odisha’s Baleshwar district as the Subarnarekha River crossed the danger mark following heavy rainfall in its upper catchment.
The water level of the river rose further after excess water was released through 13 gates of the Galudih Barrage in neighbouring Jharkhand.
Officials said the water level of the river touched 11.52 metres on Wednesday as against the warning level of 9.45 metres and danger mark of 10.36 metres at Rajghat. The swelling river has triggered fear among residents living along the riverbank.
The fresh flood in the Subarnarekha, reported to be the third in the river this year, submerged many villages in Baliapal, Jaleswar and Bhograi blocks. Several areas remained cut off from the outside world due to the flooding and gushing water. Floodwater around five feet deep was seen flowing over the roads in several areas of the district.
Sources said road connectivity has been snapped and communication came to a complete halt in the affected areas.
The fresh flooding added to the problems of people as water from the previous flood had not completely receded when the latest surge hit the region.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain cautious and vigilant as the flood situation continues to prevail.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in Mayurbhanj district has started showing signs of improvement as the water level of the Budhabalanga River began falling. People who took shelter in relief centres returned to their respective homes as the situation improved.
