Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea around the evening of September 19, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently lying over north Thailand and extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. The system is likely to emerge over the north Andaman Sea by the evening of September 18. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the same region around September 19 evening, it said.
The system is then expected to intensify gradually while moving west-north-westwards towards the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts over the following three to four days.
The developing system is likely to influence weather conditions over Odisha over the next one week.
The IMD is yet to forecast the eventual intensity of the system and its exact movement direction. There is no official prediction whether the low pressure area will intensify into a cyclonic storm.
In its midday weather bulletin, the IMD has issued a yellow warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms for several districts of Odisha for the next five days.
In the next 24 hours heavy rain is likely to lash the districts of Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput and Gajapati.
Besides, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind is likely to occur at some places over the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.
On September 17-18, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind reaching up to 30-40 kmph is likely at some places over the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.
On September 18-19, heavy rain is likely to lash Baleshwar, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts, while thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind reaching 30-40 kmph may occur in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.
From September 19 to 20, heavy rain is likely to occur in Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam. Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind reaching upto 30-40 kmph is also very likely over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.
On September 20-21, heavy rain is likely at some places over Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam, along with thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind reaching up to 30-40 kmph at one or two places over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.
