Berhampur: In a fresh case of sexual assault in Odisha, a minor girl was allegedly raped in Golanthara area of Ganjam district.
The incident that took place on Monday came to light on Tuesday after the 11-year-old girl narrated the ordeal to her parents and a complaint was lodged with the police.
Based on the complaint lodged by the survivor’s family, the main accused was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the incident.
As per the complaint, the youth lured the girl to an isolated place where he then tied up her hands and legs with a rope before allegedly committing the crime.
Preliminary investigation showed that the accused was a distant cousin of the girl.
Police said both the survivor and the accused have undergone medical examination as part of the investigation. A case has been registered and legal proceedings initiated.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage among the locals as several cases of sexual violence have been reported from the district in last one month.
Last week, a minor was sexually assaulted in Berhampur town. The accused, who was arrested following a police complaint, was reported to be a trade union leader.
