New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday cancelled an earlier court order acquitting Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riot case and sentenced him to life in prison.
The court found him guilty of killing five members of a family at Raj Nagar in Delhi following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984. He has been asked to surrender by December 31.
According to a report in NDTV, referring to the courage of Jagdish Kaur, the victim who had fought for action against Sajjan Kumar and others, the High Court said, “It is important to assure the victims that despite the challenges truth will prevail. The aftershock of those atrocities is still being felt.”
The 73-year-old is the first top leader of the Congress to be convicted in the riots that saw 3,000 people being killed by mobs.
