The number of kidney disease patients and following deaths have been increasing in our country. World Kidney Day is a global health campaign that throws light on the importance of fighting kidney  disease, said Dr Nisith K Mohanty, senior consultant, Nephrology.

Going by the theme for 2022 “Kidney Health for All”, the campaign focuses on bridging knowledge gaps to improve kidney health through increased kidney care education and awareness in public arena.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common and harmful: 1 out of 10 adult people worldwide have it, and if left untreated it can be deadly. While early detection allows for disease care and management to help prevent morbidity and mortality, and improve cost effectiveness and sustainability, kidney disease related mortality continues to increase yearly and is projected to be the 5th leading cause of death by 2040, said Dr. Mohanty.

He stressed on vegan food for patients with kidney disease.

Among others, Dr. Alok Srivastava, COO-cum-DMS of Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar and Dr Bibekananda Panda, senior Consultant, Nephrology also spoke.

To keep kidney problems under control, it is very important to exercise daily and keep the body weight under control. At the same time, consuming 8 to 10 glasses of water daily keeps the kidneys healthy.

More use of fruits and green vegetables in the diet proves beneficial for the kidney.

A health talk programme was organized too on the premises of the hospital for senior citizens to educate and sensitise them about kidney disease and care.

Dr. Sudhir M Diggikar, Regional CEO of Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, Dr Biswajit Nanda, consultant, Urology and Dr. Sunita Sahu Chief Dietician interacted with people at the mall to educate them on the maintaining  healthy kidney.
