Bhubaneswar: The protest by online cab and bike taxi drivers in Bhubaneswar entered its third day on Wednesday, causing severe inconvenience for commuters.

Agitators were seen staging a demonstration at Lower PMG up to Master Canteen Square in the capital city. The All Odisha Gig Workers’ Union led the agitation over a 30-point charter of demands.

The Ola, Uber, Rapido drivers sought government regulation of fares charged by online taxi services and a fixed fare structure for passengers. They demanded a fare of Rs 12 per kilometre during the day and Rs 15 per kilometre at night.

This apart, the drivers demanded an increase in fares whenever fuel prices rise. They also sought peak-hour and weekend bonuses, compensation for long-distance pickups and higher charges for waiting time.

The union said these measures are necessary to address the concerns of drivers providing services through online platforms.

The protesters claimed that the government gives assurances during talks, but no action is taken. As a result, drivers are unable to meet family expenses or repay loans.

The protesters’ union urged the government to hold immediate talks with the organisation and implement its demands.
