Bikaner: In a shocking incident, a 27-year-old Indian Army jawan was stabbed to death by a bedroll attendant inside an air conditioned coach of the Bikaner-Jammu Tawi Sabarmati Express on Sunday night. A man named Zubair Memon has been arrested in this connection.
According to the police, the soldier Jignesh Chaudhary was posted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur and was returning home to Sabarmati in Gujarat when the incident occurred. He had boarded the train from Firozpur Cantt in Punjab.
Preliminary investigation reveals that Chaudhary had an altercation with Memon over a bedsheet. The soldier then entered the coach and went to sleep. Memon entered the coach later, traced his location and stabbed him.
Passengers said that there was severe bleeding and they called up railway helpline numbers, seeking assistance. When the train reached Bikaner, railway doctors were waiting at the station. They sent Chaudhary to the Prince Bijay Singh Memorial Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
The Bikaner Government Railway Police (GRP) swung into action and interrogated several coach attendants before zeroing in on Memon. A knife was also found inside the coach and was seized. It will be sent for a forensics examination.
The coach in which the incident occurred has also been sealed. Forensics experts will examine it and collect samples.
“We informed the family and the Army. They went to the hospital and the body was sent for post mortem. The report is awaited. Meanwhile, an investigation is underway,” an official said.
Meanwhile, Indian Railways has also started a probe into the appointments of coach and bedroll attendants. These attendants are not railway employees. They are employed through agencies. The activities of these agencies are also being probed.
