Rangiya: An Army jawan, returning to duty after leave, turned into a saviour for an eight-month-old infant on the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express on October 13.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence on Saturday, Sepoy Sunil – an ambulance assistance at the 456 Field Hospital at the Borarupak Military Station in the Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh – was travelling in the S4 compartment of the train when the child developed severe respiratory distress.
This happened around 4.30 pm. According to a senior MoD official, the child turned unresponsive and her mother fainted, believing that she had died. There was confusion all around as the train sped towards its destination.
This was when a calm and composed Sunil approached the family and took charge of the situation. He lifted the baby and examined her but found no pulse. She was not breathing.
Sunil then laid the infant on a flat surface and initiated the paediatric cardio-pulmonary resuscitation using two fingers on the chest. He gave mouth to mouth breathing to the child. After about 2 cycles of CPR, the baby showed signs of revival. The soldier then coordinated with train staff and railway police for the infant’s further evacuation and medical management at Rangiya station.
“His timely and professional action prevented a fatality in a situation where no immediate medical support was available,” the official said.
“Throughout the incident, Sep Sunil displayed exceptional medical proficiency, quick judgement, and a high sense of duty. His decisive action and calm execution under pressure directly contributed to saving a precious life,” he added.
