Murmansk (Russia): In Murmansk’s harbour, the Lenin still draws attention as the first nuclear-powered surface ship ever built, its preserved hull standing as a reminder of Soviet-era engineering and Russia’s long Arctic push. After 30 years of service on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), the icebreaker now functions as a museum ship in the northern port city. reported.

The vessel’s keel was laid on July 17, 1956, at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg, and it entered service on December 3, 1959, becoming a pioneer in the civilian use of nuclear propulsion at sea.

Vladimir Ulyanikhin, First Category Specialist at FSUE Atomflot, Rosatom’s icebreaker operator, told ANI that the ship’s record in Arctic waters was substantial and historically important.

“The nuclear-powered icebreaker Lenin, the world’s first nuclear-powered surface ship, was in service for 30 years. It took part in 26 Arctic navigations along the Northern Sea Route, provided icebreaker assistance for 3,741 vessels and covered a total distance of 654,000 nautical miles,” Ulyanikhin said.

Today, Russia operates what Ulyanikhin described as the world’s largest icebreaker fleet, with more than 40 icebreakers, including eight nuclear-powered vessels. Managed by Atomflot, the fleet is central to Russia’s effort to keep traffic moving along the NSR throughout the year, reinforcing the route’s role as a strategic maritime link between Europe and Asia.

India-Russia Cooperation On NSR

India and Russia are also expanding cooperation on the NSR. In 2024, the two countries formed a joint working group under the inter-governmental framework to take forward cooperation on the NSR.

The working group is co-chaired by Vladimir Panov, Rosatom’s Special Representative for Arctic Development, and Rajesh Kumar Sinha from India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It held its first meeting in New Delhi in October 2024 and another in 2025, with both sides agreed to strengthen ties on transport corridors and logistics connectivity through the route.

Preserved in Murmansk, the Lenin now stands not only as a museum piece but also as an emblem of the technological leap that helped open the Arctic and continues to support Russia’s broader ambitions in the region.

Preserved as a museum in Murmansk, the Lenin remains a symbol of the technological advancement that changed Arctic navigation and continues to support Russia’s ambitions in the Arctic region.
