Puri: It’s a wet Sunday morning in the temple town, where the skies are cloudy and it has been raining moderately because of Cyclone Jawad, which has fizzled into a deep depression and is set to reach Puri by noon.
As the remnants of the cyclone approach the town, the wind speed in Puri is expected to touch 60 kmph.
Puri beach has been vacated as a safety measure and shelter homes established in the city.
“The safety of people is our topmost priority. Everyone present at Puri beach has been asked to vacate the area. Shelter homes have been established. All are requested to follow government guidelines,” Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh told ANI earlier.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday reviewed the arrangements and preparations made by Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal to deal with the cyclone.
Puri District Magistrate Samarth Verma informed earlier that teams that will undertake the restoration of power and drinking water supply were in place.
Meanwhile, fishermen in Chilika spent a sleepless night guarding their boats as the water level increased.
Several parts of the state have been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall under the influence of the deep depression.
On Sunday, Gopalpur recorded the highest 60 mm rainfall, followed by Paradip (46 mm), Chandbali (28 mm), Balasore (24 mm), Bhubaneswar (24.3 mm) and Puri (21 mm).
