Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high in Tarini slum at Unit-6 in Odisha capital after a group of miscreants allegedly attacked an accredited social health activist (ASHA) on Wednesday afternoon.
According to sources, a group of 3-4 youths of the Maa Tarni Basti assaulted a youth. When the youth shouted for help, his mother, who is an ASHA, rushed to the spot to rescue her son.
As the ASHA worker tried to restrain the youths, they attacked her with a sharp weapon and fled the spot.
Following the incident, locals rushed to the spot and admitted the ASHA to the Capital Hospital where her condition is stated to be critical.
On being informed, the Capital Police rushed to the spot and detained a youth.
Efforts are on to nab the remaining accused.
The identity of the ASHA worker and her son was not yet known till the filing of the report.
Prior to this incident, the city had witnessed two major violence in the Master Canteen area and Munda Sahi.
It may be mentioned the Police Commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi had recently told the media that taking note of the rising crimes in the slums, the Commissionerate Police have launched the Basti Chala Abhiyan in the city.
