Asian Games 2023: Avinash Sable Bags India’s First Athletics Gold In Record Time

New Delhi: Avinash Sable converted his silver in the 2022 Commonwealth Games into gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games when he left rest of the field in his wake to win the men’s 3000m steeplechase event on Sunday evening.

To make the victory doubly sweet, Sable achieved an Asian Games record timing of 8 minutes 19.50 seconds.

It was India’s first athletics gold of the Hangzhou Games, taking the country’s tally of top podium finish to 12.

Earlier today, India clinched gold in men’s trap team shooting event with the trio of Kynan Darius Chenai, Zoravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Tondaiman bagging 361 points.

In individual event, Kynan won a bronze.

The India women’s team of Manisha Keer, Preeti Rajak and Rajeshwari Kumari earned silver.

In golf, Aditi Ashok had to settle for silver in women’s individual competition.

Aditi, who had a seven-shot lead after the third round, stumbled on the final day, as Thailand’s Yubol Arpichaya held her nerve to overtake the Indian and grab gold.

Star boxer and gold-prospect Nikhat Zareen lost her women’s 50kg semifinal bout to Raksat Chuthamat to be satisfied with a bronze.
