Silchar: A female journalist working with a local digital news portal in Assam’s Sichar was found dead inside her office on Monday.
According to police, she had reported for work on Sunday but did not return home that night. Office colleagues found her body on Monday morning and informed authorities.
Police, recovered a brief note from the spot and registered a case of unnatural death. The note contained the contact number of her father.
A detailed probe is underway to determine the circumstances leading to her death.
The body has been sent for postmortem at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
According to an official, it’s suspected to be suicide, but no announcement will be made till the investigation is completed.
According to the journalist’s family members, she had worked with other media organisations earlier and was due to get married next month.
Her father said she had been living separately at a rented house and was in contact with the man she was supposed to marry.
The note recovered from her office mentioned something was not right, but the father said he could not make out what she meant. He said the family was not aware of any distress she may have been facing, and hoped that the probe will help clarify the circumstances.
The owner of the portal, who is out of India, assured that the organisation will cooperate with the investigation.
Police will record statements from colleagues, family members and workplace representatives, even as CCTV footage from the premises is being examined.
