Mumbai: Ayushmann Khurrana, known for taking up films based on taboo and socially-sensitive subjects, now wants to shift his focus towards family entertainers.
From sperm donation in ‘Vicky Donor’ to erectile dysfunction in ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’, Ayushmann has carved a niche in Bollywood by choosing stories that tackled uncomfortable topics with humour and emotion.
However, Ayushmann says he has entered a new phase in his career and wants to work on films that connect with a broader family audience.
On The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, the actor was asked which taboo subject he would like to explore next.
Ayushmann’s replied: “I think maine saare taboo topics khatam kar diye hain. I have worked in so many films based on them. It limits the family audience. I did films on taboo subjects before the Covid pandemic. Even after that, I did Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui and Doctor G, which didn’t get as much at the box office as I hoped for.”
Ayushmann’s remarks reflect the changing theatrical landscape after the pandemic, with several actors and filmmakers reconsidering the kind of stories that attract audiences to cinemas.
The actor also said that the growing popularity of OTT platforms has influenced his choice of films.
“After OTT became big, I only looked for films which were for wider audiences. Taboo break se zyaada relatable subjects which people can watch together. Everything was so different before the pandemic, the films I did had tremendous box office uproar. But things changed post pandemic,” he said.
The actor was recently seen in ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh Do’, which was released in theatres on Friday and registered an average opening day at the box office.
He will next be seen in ‘Yeh Prem Mol Liya’ and ‘Udta Teer’.
