Balasore: To safeguard communal harmony following a recent mob lynching incident that sparked widespread outrage, Balasore police have issued a stern advisory, urging people to refrain from posting or sharing inflammatory, divisive, or misleading content on social media platforms.
The advisory follows the January 14 incident in which a 33-year-old man from a minority community was beaten to death on suspicion of cattle smuggling in Astia village. Six persons have so far been arrested in connection with the case, and further investigation is underway.
Balasore SP Pratyush Diwakar explained that the advisory is a proactive measure to prevent the spread of rumours, misinformation, and hate speech that could exacerbate tensions in the district. “The advisory is not limited to the recent lynching case but serves as a general guideline for responsible use of digital platforms during sensitive times,” he stated.
He highlighted instances where individuals have misused social media to circulate unfounded messages, leading to unrest and confusion.
The advisory directs citizens to refrain from publishing, sharing, or commenting on content that targets specific communities, incites hatred, or disturbs public order. People are also encouraged to report any harmful or misleading posts by providing screenshots or links.
Diwakar appealed to residents to exercise restraint and cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace. “We request everyone to exercise restraint and not forward such posts. Strict action will be taken against violators,” he added.
