Bhubaneswar: A Bangladeshi national, who served a 14-year prison sentence in Odisha after being convicted in several criminal cases, was deported to his homeland after completion of all legal formalities.
Police said Mohammad Babu Khan, a resident of Hamirdi village under Bhanga police limits in Faridpur district of Bangladesh, was handed over for deportation after authorities verified his nationality and secured the required travel documents.
A police team escorted the criminal to the Benapole-Petrapole border along the India-Bangladesh border at night on Wednesday. He was handed over following due procedures.
According to police, Babu Khan had illegally entered India in 2002 without a valid passport or visa, claiming to have come in search of work as a labourer. However, investigators alleged that he later became involved in several criminal activities in Baleshwar.
Police records show that Babu Khan was named in nine criminal cases registered at Town, Basta, Sadar, Industrial Area and Remuna police stations.
The Bangladeshi was arrested on May 27, 2007, as a foreign national and subsequently lodged in the Baleshwar District Jail, where he completed his 14-year sentence.
After instructions from the authorities concerned in Odisha, and clearance through the Bangladesh High Commission, the deportation process was initiated.
Officials said the deportation was carried out in accordance with legal procedures after the completion of his prison term and necessary diplomatic formalities.
It may be noted that Odisha Police have been carrying out raids since November last year to identify the suspected Bangladeshi nationals illegally residing in the State.
