Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the northern coast of Sri Lanka, under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and nearby regions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Monday.
The system formed around 5:30 am on May 11 and is expected to become more marked over the next 48 hours.
Squally Weather with wind speed 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph may prevail along and off Sri Lanka Coast & over most parts of Gulf of Mannar, adjoining parts of Comorin Area, some parts of southwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal.
No major concern for Odisha at present
The IMD has not issued any specific warnings or forecasts, indicating a significant impact of the system on Odisha.
According to weather experts, though conditions are favourable for further intensification over the next 2–3 days, possibly into a marginal Depression, the system may either weaken over the sea or drift towards Myanmar. “It may dissipate near Tamil Nadu or move towards Myanmar. The system, if turns into a Depression, can lead to an increase in the temperature in Odisha. Mercury levels may gradually rise from May 12-13 and cross 45°C in interior Odisha by May 16-17. Coastal area may experience similar hot and humid conditions by May 18-19,” said Director of CEC of SOA in Bhubaneswar, Sarat Sahu.
The MeT office has forecast a rise in the day temperature by 2-4°C across the state after 2-3 days. Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 40-60 kmph) may also occur during May 11-14.
