Puri: Two tourists from West Bengal, including a woman, were found hanging inside a hotel room near Penthakata in Odisha’s Puri town on Thursday.
After receiving information about the incident, a police team reached the site and launched a detailed investigation.
The incident came to light after a foul smell was detected from a room at the hotel on Chakra Tirtha Road and there was no response when the door was knocked. The hotel manager alerted the Marine Police Station, and as the door was locked from inside, the police broke it open.
They found the bodies of a man and a woman hanging from the ceiling fan. As per hotel register, the two had checked in on August 9, Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra told reporters.
He said the family members of the deceased as well as West Bengal police have been informed.
While prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide, the exact reason would be ascertained after a thorough probe, police said.
While a forensic team examined the room, steps have been taken for conducting the post-mortem. CCTV footage from the hotel will also be reviewed as part of the probe.
