Bengaluru: A security breach at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison has come to light after life-term convict and former MP Prajwal Revanna was discovered with an Android mobile phone inside his barrack, prompting an internal inquiry and disciplinary action against jail staff.
The contraband device was uncovered during a five-hour sweep by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Tuesday at the high security prison, which focused on high-profile inmates among others, Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar said on Wednesday.
“On Tuesday afternoon, the CCB conducted the raid. One android phone has been seized from Prajjwal Revanna’s barrack,” Kumar said.
Following the seizure, the CCB has filed a complaint with the Parappana Agrahara Police Station, and the process of registering an FIR is underway, he said.
Kumar also noted that Revanna’s barrack had been inspected by prison authorities on August 6, but that search did not lead to the recovery of any prohibited items, as reported by The New Indian Express.
In the wake of the latest seizure, Assistant Superintendent Iranna Rangapur has been suspended on the recommendation of the DIG (South) for dereliction of duty, while a show-cause notice has been served on the Superintendent of Bengaluru Central Prison.
“A detailed enquiry is being conducted in this incident,” Kumar said.
“No other contraband item was found during the 4-5 hours search conducted over various high profile prisoners and on other prisoners in High Security Prison, on 11.08.26 by CCB,” Kumar said.
Revanna, who is the grandson of ex-prime minister H D Deve Gowda and the son of JD(S) leader H D Revanna, served as the Lok Sabha member for Hassan between 2019 and 2024.
He was taken into custody in May 2024 over sexual assault allegations and was subsequently convicted in a rape case. A Bengaluru special court handed him a life sentence in August 2025, after which he was shifted to Parappana Agrahara prison.
