Bhubaneswar: BJD Mayor candidate for Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Sulochana Das has won the Municipal election by a margin of 61,000 votes against BJP’s Suniti Mund.
While Sulochana polled 1,74,487 votes, Suniti got 1,13,400 and Congrees’ Madhusmita Acharya was a distant third with 11,006 votes. A total of 2,351 voters chose the NOTA option, official sources said.
With this, she has become the first woman Mayor to head the BMC.
Bhubaneswar had last seen a woman heading its civic body in 1993 when then Janata Dal’s Kiran Bala Mangaraj was elected as Chairperson. Bhubaneswar’s affairs were looked after by a municipality and not a municipal corporation. Biju Patnaik was then Odisha Chief Minister.
After the results were announced, Sulochana thanked all people of the city for electing her to the post.
The journalist-turned-politician had joined the BJD in June 2017 after quitting Congress. Sulochana served as spokesperson for BJD being appointed as State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities in September 2019.
During her stint as the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Sulochana was instrumental in setting Integrated Infrastructure Complex for the rehabilitation of elderly persons, transgenders, drug addicts and destitute people in different districts.
She did her schooling at Binjharpur village school, Jajpur. She completed graduation from Bhadrak college and post-graduation from Ravenshaw University. Later, she did her Masters in Economics and Journalism and Mass Communication, and also holds an LLB degree from a reputed institution.
Notably, she is the richest among all candidates who contested for Mayor post in the March 24 urban local bodies election in Bhubaneswar.

Of 67 wards of the BMC, the BJD has emerged victorious in 48. The BJP has won 10 wards while Congress failed to open an account in the polls. Independent candidates won 9 wards.
The polling was held in 705 booths across the city and its periphery on March 24 and saw only 50 per cent voter turnout.
