Bhubaneswar: Around six weeks after the murder of Bhubaneswar-based builder Sasmit Biswal, police recreated the crime scene on Monday in the sensational case.
As per police sources, key accused Debadatta Parida was taken to the cashew forest near Jamukoli under the jurisdiction of Airfield Police Station of Bhubaneswar. The crime scene was recreated to gather more information about the murder.
The prime accused, who had been absconding for a long time after committing the crime, surrendered before a court recently. He was then brought on remand and taken to the crime spot for reconstruction of the events surrounding the incident. The purpose was to establish the sequence of events and verify the statements of the accused.
It may be noted that Biswal was brutally beaten to death on April 11. Five persons, including a home guard, were arrested in connection with the case earlier. The latest development marks a significant progress in solving the high-profile murder.
Investigation is still in progress and police do not rule out the involvement of more people.
Stating that the weapon used in the crime has been seized from the prime accused following his confessional statement, police said the weapon was earlier hidden by him in a deserted house.
Police will send the incriminating instrument to State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) in Bhubaneswar for examination.
The deceased, who belonged to Bhimpur under the Airport police limits, was ambushed by a group while he was attempting to assert his claim over a piece of land and was trying to take the possession of it. The miscreants beat him to death and fled the spot after committing the crime.
Sasmit was rescued by some locals and was rushed to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where doctors had declared him dead.
