Bhubaneswar: In a decisive crackdown on the illegal firearms trade, the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police seized six semi-automatic pistols, along with related items, and arrested a key suspect in the early hours of Friday (January 16).
The operation took place around 2 am near Kuji Mahal Playground under Chandaka police limits.
Acting on a reliable intelligence tip-off, the SCU team conducted targeted surveillance and intercepted the suspect, identified as Manoj Kumar Mallick alias Papu, a resident of Bodua village under Binjharpur police limits in Jajpur district. Six semi-automatic pistols, 10 rounds of live ammunition, six magazines, one mobile phone, a two-wheeler, and cash amounting to Rs 500 were recovered from his possession.
“The suspect was apprehended without resistance and is currently in custody, where he is being interrogated to uncover details about his network, supply sources, and potential accomplices,” a police release said.
Speaking to the media, Commissioner of Police S Dev Datta Singh the seizure and arrest are part of the ongoing efforts to curb unlawful weapons proliferation in the region. He emphasised that the operation is a key step in dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal arms trade and safeguarding public safety.
Further investigation is underway to trace the broader supply chain, identify financial backers, and expose any larger syndicates, he added.
Police have urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities related to illegal firearms.
