Bhubaneswar Records 38°C Before Noon; Rain & Gusty Wind To Return To Odisha From Today

Bhubaneswar: Amid India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast about a dip in the day temperature on Sunday, five places in Odisha, including the state capital Bhubaneswar, recorded 37 degree Celisus and above by 11.30 am.

Jharsuguda was the hottest at 39.6 degree Celsius followed by Balasore and Bhubaneswar at 38 degree Celsius each, Sambalpur (37.2) and Gopalpur (37). Similarly, Chandbali recorded 36.6 degree Celsius and Puri and Keonjhar 36.2 degree Celsius each before noon, the regional centre tweeted.

The state has been reeling under severe heatwave for the last few days. While sweltering heat conditions continued on Saturday, there was a drop in mercury level at some places on the day as compared to Friday. Jharsuguda was the hottest at 42.2 degree Celsius in the last 24 hours (April 15) while the mercury had soared to 44 degree Celsius in Baripada on April 14.

While the temperature dipped by around 0.4 degrees in Jharsuguda, Bhubaneswar witnessed an increase in temperature with 41.7 degree compared 40.6 the previous day. No change in temperature was seen in Cuttack city, which recorded 41.2 degree each on Friday and Saturday.

The mercury is likely to soar to 40 degree Celsius in the twin cities with Jharsuguda being the hottest at 42 degree Celsius on April 16 followed by a slight fall in temperature thereafter, the Met office said.

According to All-India Weather Bulletin at 8.45 this morning, light/moderate isolated rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds is very likely over Odisha from April 16-19. Thunderstorm with lightning & gusty wind (30-40 kmph) is likely at isolated places in Odisha for five days from April 16, it added

“The rainfall activity will occur as the moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is expected to recommence,” said Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre scientist Umasankar Das.
