Explaining the reasons for the ongoing heat wave in the state, Das said that it is due to the hot and dry wind from the west. “While the dry wind is now blowing in the lower atmosphere and there is less moisture in the air, the surface temperature has considerably gone up,” he pointed out.

According to an evening bulletin of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), apart from Bhubaneswar, the day temperature went above 40 degrees Celsius at 17 places. Those are Balasore (43), Chandbali (42.6), Cuttack (40.6), Angul (41.7), Baripada (43.6), Jharsuguda (40.5), Sambalpur (40.8), Sundargarh (40.5), Talcher (42.5), Bhawanipatna (41.5), Balangir (41.5), Titlagarh (41.2), Malkangiri (42), Sonepur (40.8), Nayagarh (41.2), Boudh (42) and Rayagada (40.1).

The IMD has forecast that the maximum day temperature in 12 districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda and Ganjam will fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius till April 4 due to rain and thundershower. But, it will shoot up by 4-6 degrees during the subsequent two days from April 5.
