Bhubaneswar: Plans are afoot to build a model cowshed in Bhubaneswar at a cost of Rs 40 crore to shelter stray cattle roaming across the city.
The move to have a shelter aims to make the state capital free from stray cattle and enhance road safety, Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said.
Stating that the state government has already identified land for the project, the Minister said that a comprehensive plan has also been prepared to ensure its smooth implementation.
Apart from serving as a safe shelter for cattle, the proposed project will also focus on producing various products from cow dung and urine. The government has initiated the necessary processes in this regard.
Five cowsheds are already under construction in urban areas to remove cattle from busy roads and reduce traffic hazards, he said.
Noting that stray cattle often cause road accidents and casualties among both people and animals, the Minister said that the state government is sensitive to this issue and is taking concrete steps to deal with the issue.
