Washington: The difference between the United States and India regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine is out in the open. The Joe Biden administration turned the heat on New Delhi on Thursday and warned that “there is no room for excuses or equivocation.”
US President Joe Biden pulled out the China card in a bid to force India to publicly denounce and renounce Russia. The US convened an emergency virtual meeting of Quad countries, also involving Japan and Australia, which are more openly aligned with Washington, reported The Times of India.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had trashed the idea of putting Ukraine on the Quad agenda last month. “This meeting is focused on the Indo-Pacific, so I think you should figure out the geography there,” he was quoted as saying reporters after the Quad meeting in Melbourne.
On the other hand, US officials said the Biden administration is “working to urge India to take a clear position” in lieu of its three abstentions in the UN debates on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
