Chennai: Actor-turned politician Vijay’s much-awaited film ‘Jana Nayagan’ has hit a major roadblock as the Supreme Court on Thursday refused to intervene in the ongoing CBFC certification row and dismissed the plea filed by KVN Productions.
According to a report by India Today, the apex Court made it clear that it will not interfere in the matter at this stage and instructed the filmmakers to approach the Madras High Court, clarifying that the issue must be argued before the division bench.
The top court further asked the High Court to “endeavour to decide the appeal on January 20.”
Earlier, the Madras High Court had stayed a single judge’s order that instructed the CBFC to give clearance to the film.
The division bench also reprimanded the makers for showing a “false sense of urgency,” and ordered the CBFC to hold back the certificate until the case is fully heard.
After the stay order, the producers approached the Supreme Court seeking immediate relief.
However, the apex court refused to entertain the plea, leaving ‘Jana Nayagan’ stuck in legal limbo.
For now, the fate of Vijay’s political thriller remains uncertain, with CBFC certification still pending.
Earlier, veteran actor and Rajya Sabha member Kamal Haasan had strongly criticized the CBFC for its lack of transparency in handling the certification process for Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’, which led to its postponement from the planned Pongal release.
Directed by H. Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain in key roles.
