BJB College Student’s Death: Odisha Assembly Adjourned; Parents Stage Night-Long Protest

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned till 11:30 am on Monday after members created ruckus in the House over the death of a girl student of BJB College in Bhubaneswar.

As the House convened, Congress and BJP MLAs rushed to the Well and raised slogans to draw the attention of Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukh during Question Hour.

The Speaker urged the Opposition members to raise the issue in Zero Hour instead of Question Hour.

As pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 11.30 am.

Meanwhile, the parents of Ruchika Mohanty, who was found hanging inside the college hostel on Saturday, are staging a protest in front of the college since Sunday night demanding justice for their daughter.

Ruchika, a Plus III first-year student who hailed from Athagarh in Cuttack district, was found dead in room 201 at Karubaki Hostel of the college. A purported note found by police points at ragging and harassment by three seniors as the reason behind the 19-year-old’s extreme step.

She, however, did not mention the names of the students.

The Twin Commissionerate Police has formed a three-member special team led by an additional DCP rank officer to probe the matter.

Principal Dr Niranjan Mishra told the media that an internal enquiry will be conducted to identify the seniors who harassed her.

Meanwhile, Badagada police registered a case under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Notably, first-year MBBS student Nishant Kumar of Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Balangir allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the college hostel building on April 22.
