Mumbai / Pune / Thane: The results of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections delivered a historic and decisive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, marking a dramatic shift in the state’s urban political landscape.
In the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance crossed the majority threshold, reported Hindustan Times.
The alliance secured 118 seats in Mumbai, giving it control of the civic body for the first time in decades.
BJP candidates won 89 seats, while its ally, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, won 29, reports claimed.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) faction won 65 seats, the Congress (in alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi) got 24 seats.
The outcome ended nearly 30 years of dominance by the undivided Shiv Sena over the BMC. Across 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, results have been declared for 2,833 out of 2,868 seats.
The BJP secured around 1,400 seats statewide, while its ally Shiv Sena took 397. The Shiv Sena (UBT) faction won 153 seats, and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) won 13.
The Congress won 324 seats across the corporations.
In Pune Municipal Corporation, the BJP achieved a significant majority, outpacing both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The BJP also performed strongly in Pimpri-Chinchwad, securing control of that civic body as well.
In Navi Mumbai, the BJP made major gains, winning control of the municipal corporation for the first time.
The results represent a significant boost for the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) Mahayuti, which is poised to govern in over two-thirds of the municipal corporations.
Leaders from the BJP celebrated the results as a “mandate for development and good governance”.
The election also underscored setbacks for the reunited Thackeray and Pawar family alliances, which had aimed to reclaim influence in key civic areas.
Other Notes from Polling and Counting
Votes were counted on January 16, following polling on January 15 across major cities and towns in Maharashtra.
The combined Mahayuti alliance not only secured a majority in BMC but is projected to lead in 25 of the 29 municipal corporations.
