New Delhi: Almost a month after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down as India’s Vice-President, the ruling dispensation zeroed in on a replacement candidate.
BJP president J P Nadda announced on Sunday that the NDA’s candidate for the post of the Vice President will be Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan.
“He has a 40-year experience in politics and wore many hats,” said BJP chief JP Nadda after the party’s parliamentary board meeting on Sunday to finalise a candidate for the election.
The Vice-Presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9, with the last date of nomination being August 22. The Opposition is yet to decide on its candidate.
Born on October 20, 1957, Radhakrishnan was one of the saffron party’s long-standing leaders from Tamil Nadu.
A two-time Member of Parliament from Coimbatore, Radhakrishnan served as BJP’s state president of Tamil Nadu.
From his college days, Radhakrishnan was associated with the RSS and Jan Sangh.
He served as Jharkhand’s Governor from February 2023 to March 2024. He was given additional responsibilities of Telangana Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
On 27th July 2024, Radhakrishnan was appointed the Governor of Maharashtra.
