Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is going to get rid of unused vehicles parked on roadsides across the city.

Bhubaneswar: Toughening its stand on the unused vehicles parked on roadsides in Odisha capital, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an ultimatum to remove those within a week.

The BMC, in a notification on Friday, said the unused vehicles parked on roadside across the city present an ugly and unhygienic look. Covered with dust and murk, these vehicles also pose health hazards as those pose hindrances for the sanitation workers to clean the drains and roads. Besides, the unclaimed vehicles have turned breeding grounds for mosquitoes which spread various diseases.

Considering these factors, the BMC directed the owners of such vehicles to remove those within seven days, failing which, it would take necessary action. “For any failure to comply with the directions set forth in this notice will lead to action against you by way of seizure of the property and initiation of auction of your property to utilise the same as charges towards removal in exercise of the powers conferred to the Corporation under Section 24 (xvi), Section 437 and Section 674 of the Orissa Municipal Corporation Act, 2003,” read the notice.

The BMC also took to Twitter to caution the people. It uploaded pictures of notices being pasted on such vehicles giving a week’s time to their owners. “Defunct vehicles lying on the roads will be removed. Notice has been pasted on the vehicles that within 7 days if the owners didn’t take it to their private place, then BMC will lift it & clear the area,” the BMC said.

“As our efforts are on to make Bhubaneswar a clean city, we feel sorry to see some vehicle owners leaving their unused vehicles parked by the roadsides in many parts of the city. Because of this, the drains and the areas can’t be cleaned properly. Antisocial elements are also using these vehicles as their hideouts. To get the city rid of these unused vehicles, the BMC has issued the notice,” a local TV channel quoted BMC Mayor Sulochana Das as saying.
