Dubai: Ravichandran Ashwin’s running out — or ‘Mankading’ – of Jos Buttler for backing up too far at the non-striker’s end in an IPL match last year caused a huge controversy.
In the ongoing edition of IPL, the senior India off-spinner – playing for Delhi Capitals now — warned Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Aaron Finch when he backed up a bit too early and later tweeted: “Let’s make it clear!! First and final warning for 2020. I am making it official and don’t blame me later on.”
As the debate rages over whether it’s ‘fair’ to ‘Mankad’ a batsman at the non-striker’s end for rushing out of the crease before the bowler had bowled, Iceland Cricket gave it a ‘humorous’ twist by attributing a ‘fake’ quote to Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting who is one among many in favour of upholding “spirit of cricket” all the time and even had a talk with Ashwin on this ahead of the tournament.
Iceland Cricket took a dig at Ponting’s stance on Mankading, using a bogus quote and a picture of Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni stumping AB de Villiers.
“‘This is so unsporting of MS Dhoni. He does it all the time. The batsman only came out of his crease by a short margin and he didn’t mean to. Dhoni should be giving the batsman a warning and then let him carry on batting,” Ricky Ponting’s ‘tweet’ read.
Iceland Cricket had once trolled US President Donald Trump for mispronouncing Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar’s name and comparing it to a Chinese menu.
