Kolkata: Security has been tightened at Eden Gardens in Kolkata during the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Chennai Super Kings (CSK) match on Wednesday after the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) received a bomb threat from an anonymous e-mail ID.
The IPL 2025 match was not disrupted though and KKR scored 179/6, batting first. The Kolkata Police, meanwhile, are carrying out checks in and around the iconic stadium, without causing any alarm. Efforts are also being made to track the e-mail.
The threat comes on a day the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered mock drills to be held across the country in preparation for a possible conflict with Pakistan. Early on Wednesday, India carried out missile strikes on nine terror establishments in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
These strikes, named Operation Sindoor, were in reaction to the terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 that left 26 persons, mostly tourists from across the country, dead and several others injured. Investigations have revealed that the attack was masterminded in Pakistan. At least two of the terrorists physically involved in the attack were Pakistanis.
Pakistan, however, refused to acknowledge the role of proscribed terror outfits like the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). This prompted India to launch missile attacks on terror camps and launchpads across the border. At least 80 terrorists are suspected to have died in the attack.
Security agencies are cautious as Pakistan has vowed revenge though India has maintained that the missile strikes were not aimed at any miliary installation of that country. India has maintained that the targets were selected based on intelligence inputs about specific establishments associated with terrorists.
While Wednesday’s match doesn’t have much relevance for CSK that is at the bottom of the IPL table, it is important for KKR that is at 6th position.
