Nashville, Tenn.: Tennessee suspended all remaining executions for the year after officials failed to put Christa Gail Pike to death on Wednesday, even after administering two doses of a lethal drug in an attempt to carry out a 1995 murder sentence, Associated Press reported.

Governor Bill Lee ordered an immediate pause and called for an independent review, calling the botched procedure an unacceptable breach of the state’s duty to carry out lawful sentences “in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective.”

Pike, 50, remained alive and was heard “loudly snoring” after receiving two injections of pentobarbital, her attorneys said in court filings. She was removed from the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution by ambulance and taken to a hospital, though her lawyers said they had not been updated on her condition.

Robin M. Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, described the incident as “singular and unparalleled,” noting that while seven other inmates have survived execution attempts due to failed IV access, no one has remained alive after actually receiving lethal drugs.

Timeline Of Procedure

Media witnesses reported that curtains to the execution chamber were raised at 7:27 p.m., revealing Pike strapped to a gurney. She delivered last words, saying, “I’m going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life and that is in love,” adding she was at peace.

However, Pike stayed conscious and at one point lifted her head to ask officials whether her arm was “supposed to feel that way.” A second dose was administered by 8:26 p.m., yet she continued snoring behind the closed curtain until the microphone feed was cut at 8:53 p.m., when witnesses were escorted out.

Legal Scramble And Governor’s Response

Late on Wednesday, Pike’s lawyers filed emergency motions in state and federal courts, arguing she endured “unnecessary agony” in violation of protections against cruel and unusual punishment.

The Tennessee Department of Correction maintained it “followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office,” though the protocol does not specify what occurs if an inmate survives a second dose.

Governor Lee’s order cancels another execution scheduled later this year and marks the second time Tennessee has been unable to complete an execution in 2026; in May, officials abandoned the lethal injection of Tony Carruthers after failing for over an hour to secure an IV line.

Background Of Case

Pike and her then-boyfriend were convicted of the January 1995 stabbing and beating of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a classmate at a Knoxville job-training center. The case drew national attention due to a pentagram carved into Slemmer’s body, fueling fears of satanic ritual during the era’s “satanic panic.”

While Pike’s boyfriend, who was 17 at the time, received life with parole, Pike became the only person sentenced to death. She would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than two centuries.

Victim’s Family Left Waiting

Colleen’s mother, May Martinez, had traveled to Nashville hoping to witness the execution. “Every time I think about it, I think about Colleen feeling that pain and trying to get up and run,” she told The Associated Press before the halt.

Martinez could not be immediately contacted for comment after the execution was halted.
