Mumbai: British actor Hugh Grant, who is in Delhi to attend the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, expressed his desire to work in a Bollywood film.
In the course of a candid conversation with actor Rahul Khanna on Saturday, the international heartthrob also revealed the names of Indian actresses he would like to share screen with in a Bollywood movie. They include Moon Moon Sen, Shabana Azmi and Supriya Pathak.
When Rahul asked if he would to like work in a Bollywood film, Hugh replied, “Yes, yes! I’d love to do one. I love song and dance now. Song and dance keeps cropping up in my films, like in Paddington 2. I did that big dance in the end, loved it. Loved it! I don’t really see the point in any other form of entertainment. You know, when song and dance is done right, it’s just blissful.”
Asked who he would like to work with, Hugh said, “A Bollywood co-star? I don’t know, you tell me. Moon Moon Sen!”
The English actor added, “Still young, like me. And they’re still doing well, are they? How’s Shabana? Shabana Azmi I know is still working. Supriya Pathak, very much so. She was such a great girl. Where does she live? I’d love to see her again.”
Hugh and Supriya had collaborated for Nicolas Klotz’s French film ‘The Bengali Night (La Nuit Bengali)’ in 1988. The film, which also starred Shabana, was shot in Kolkata.
Sharing about his current India trip, Hugh said, “I enjoyed my trip. I brought some friends. We’ve done a lot of shopping, a lot of bargaining. And my hotel room is absolutely stuffed with shawls and other things. And we had an excellent experience at the market with the tarot reader. I asked tarot readers to read my wife’s fortune and this lady was uncannily accurate about who my wife was or my children were like. And we’re slightly obsessed with her now and we’re thinking of going back to her, to get more news about our future.”
“I don’t think she recognised me at all. So now she’s my new guru,” he added.
In another segment of the same interview, Hugh opened up about how his mother never wanted him to become an actor.
“Well, it’s true, I fell into it (acting) by mistake. When I was about 23, I thought, ‘Okay, this is a laugh. I’ll do this for a year or two.’ Because I was poor, I had no money. And then I’ll do a grown-up job. And here I am at 65, still doing it. In some ways, I’m ashamed of myself.”
Asked what his parents wanted him to be, the actor revealed, “Well, they certainly didn’t want me to be an actor. My mother came from the school that put actors and prostitutes on the same kind of level. So I think she always wanted me to go into the church. Hilarious! She though.”
