Mayurbhanj: Police in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district have arrested two brothers for the brutal March 21 attack that killed a hostel warden and critically injured a principal of a private school in Baisinga area.
Sanyasi Jena (19) and his brother Shukadeb Jena (21), both from the Kalama area, were detained from Chandipur and presented before a court following crime scene reconstruction. Police also identified a minor student as an alleged accomplice. “A minor, who allegedly assisted the accused, has been presented before the Juvenile Justice Board in Baripada,” Additional Superintendent of Police Ajay Barik said.
Two knives, a plastic pipe, two mobile phones, a motorcycle, and cash amounting to Rs 28,823 were seized from them.
According to police, the Jena brothers frequently visited the school hostel to meet a girl student. Hostel warden Sanyasi Das of Kutimunda village reported the matter to principal Kadambini Rout, who issued a strict warning to the brothers.
Enraged, the brothers allegedly planned revenge. They took help from a minor student and ambushed Rout and Das near Gada Deula Square on NH-18 while they were on their way to Kalama on a motorcycle and attacked them with a dagger. One among them slit the hostel warden’s neck while the school headmistress was left with critical injuries. While Das was declared dead at Remuna hospital in Balasore, Rout was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after her condition deteriorated.
