Rourkela: Ahead of the March 31 deadline to end Left-wing extremism (LWE), a woman cadre associated with the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit’s Anmol group, active in the dense Saranda forest, surrendered before Rourkela Police in Odisha on Monday.

The surrendered cadre was welcomed with a flower bouquet and a cap by Western Range DIG Brijesh Rai and Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani, symbolising her reintegration into mainstream.

DIG Rai assured her full benefits under the state government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy, which includes financial assistance, skill development support, and security for former insurgents choosing to lay down arms. “19-year-old Mungri Honhag, a member of the local guerrilla wing of the banned outfit, surrendered before the Rourkela Police today. She had joined the group in 2024.  This significant success is the result of sustained operations and effective intelligence efforts under the leadership of Rourkela SP. Odisha’s policy is considered one of the best in the entire country…,” he told the media.

He further stated that she was involved four Maoist offensives, including the looting of 5,000 kg of explosives from the Banko stone quarry and the IED blast on the railway tracks under K Balang police limits, in which a trackman was killed and another injured last year. “The group scattered after a firing incident in January this year,” he added.

Odisha police had earlier identified Anmol, a Jharkhand-based Maoist leader, as the mastermind behind the Banko theft.

This comes a day after DGP YB Khurania appealed to the remaining cadres to surrender before the state police and join the mainstream during a visit to Kandhamal to review the Maoist situation in the district.

Addressing mediapersons, Khurania praised the efforts of Odisha Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), district voluntary force (DVF) and Special Intelligence Wing (SIW) as well as central paramilitary forces CRPF and BSF for eliminating the menace from the state.

The DGP further stated that 77 Maoists had surrendered before Odisha Police since January 2025, while another 23 from the state laid down arms before Chhattisgarh Police. Security forces neutralised 27 Maoists in various operations during the period, he added.
