New Delhi: A three-storeyed building collapsed in the capital’s Sabzi Mandi area on Monday afternoon, killing two minors and trapping a number of people under the debris.
According to Delhi Police, two children who were rescued from the rubble succumbed to their injuries. They were learnt to be passing by the building when it came down in a heap.
At least four people are still likely to be trapped under the debris.
Besides the two children, an elderly person was brought out from the rubble. He is undergoing treatment in a hospital. A car was also hit by the collapsing building.
Rescue and relief operations are underway with the help of five fire tenders and earthmovers. An NDRF team is also in action.
Police said construction work was going on in a shop inside the building. Police said an FIR will be registered under Section 304 against the shop owner and appropriate action taken against him.
According to eyewitnesses, a few adjacent buildings shook and power went out when the building collapsed in a congested area of north Delhi.
“The building collapse incident in Sabzi Mandi area is extremely sad. The administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations. I myself am monitoring the situation,” said Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
