Rourkela: In an alarming burglary in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, thieves broke into a locked house and decamped with gold jewellery and cash worth several lakhs of rupees.

The property belonged to local businessman Abakash Das in the Chunipada locality under Kutra police limits. The theft took place while the family was away. While Abakash had traveled to his in-laws’ place in Burla, and his younger brother, Ramesh Das, was in Rajgangpur.

According to sources, the burglars scaled the back wall, forced open the main lock, and ransacked the premises. They broke into almirahs (wardrobes) across three rooms and stole Rs 7–8 lakh in cash along with nearly 10 tolas of gold ornaments.

The theft was discovered around 8 pm on Sunday when Ramesh Das returned home and found the house in disarray. He informed Kutra police, who arrived at the scene and launched an investigation. The bold break-in has caused panic among residents of Chunipada. Local people are calling for enhanced night patrolling and improved security measures in the area to prevent similar incidents.
