CAA Protest In Assam: CM Says He Will Resign If Any Outsider Not Figuring In NRC Enters State

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said he would resign if even one person, who has not applied for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, gets citizenship.

“I am a son of Assam and if a single person who has not applied for the NRC in the state gets citizenship, I will be the first to resign,” the CM told PTI on the sidelines of a programme at Sivasagar.

According to reports, protests that erupted across Assam following the Centre’s notification for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 on Monday, continued on Tuesday.

Effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were burnt in different places. The protestors claimed that lakhs of people from neighbouring states and countries will enter Assam after implementation of CAA.

But the chief minister tried to pacify the protesters by allaying their fear of exodus from outside. “If this happens, I will be the first to protest,” he reacted.
